Can CBD Legally Relieve Pain? What UK Law Actually Says
Half the CBD industry will tell you their oil or flower can ease your pain. Legally, none of them can prove that — and neither can we. CBD is a food supplement under UK law, not a medicine, and no brand is allowed to claim it treats anything, pain included. That includes us.

The pattern holds here too: we'd rather tell you what the law actually says than sell you a story we can't back up.
What UK law actually says
CBD products sold as food or drink in the UK — including capsules, oils, and teas like ours — fall under the Novel Food regulations, overseen by the Food Standards Agency. To stay on the FSA's Novel Food list, a product has to meet safety and labelling standards as a food supplement. It does not have to prove any effect on the body, because a food supplement is not permitted to claim one.
Separately, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) controls who can make medicinal claims in the UK. A "medicinal claim" is any statement that a product can prevent, treat, or cure a condition — or, under the same rules, that it relieves a symptom like pain. Only a licensed medicine can carry that kind of claim, and getting a product licensed as a medicine is a long, expensive process that involves clinical trials most CBD brands, us included, have not run and are not running.
So the legal picture is simple: as a food supplement, we cannot say our tea relieves pain, eases discomfort, or has any therapeutic effect — regardless of what customers might personally experience. Any brand that tells you otherwise is either unaware of the rules or choosing to ignore them. Neither is a good sign.
What we can actually tell you
Since we can't make claims about effects, here's what we focus on instead: what's actually in the product, and proof that it's what we say it is.
Cannabinoid content
Every batch of Calm Leaf tea is lab-tested for its cannabinoid profile, including CBD content in milligrams per serving. We publish the figures rather than vague terms like "high strength" — you can see exactly what's in the pack before you buy it.
Terpene profile
Terpenes are the aromatic compounds that give hemp its characteristic flavour and scent. Our blends list the dominant terpenes present, so you know what you're drinking — this is about composition, not outcome.
Format
Calm Leaf comes as a loose-leaf and bagged tea, brewed like any other herbal tea. No syringes, no droppers, no guesswork about dosing — just a measured amount of hemp per serving, steeped in hot water.
Caffeine-free
Unlike green or black tea, our hemp tea contains no caffeine. That's a factual property of the plant material used, not a claim about how it might make you feel.
Lab-testing and Certificates of Analysis
Every batch is tested by an independent, third-party lab, and the Certificate of Analysis (COA) is available for anyone who wants to check it. The COA confirms cannabinoid levels, checks for contaminants like pesticides and heavy metals, and confirms THC stays within the UK legal limit. We publish this because verifiable facts are the only thing we're allowed to sell you on.
Why we keep saying this
Across this series — sleep, anxiety, and now pain — the theme has stayed the same. We're not the brand that will tell you our tea will fix how you feel, because legally, we can't, and honestly, we don't think any CBD food supplement brand can prove it either. What we can do is show you exactly what's in the product, prove it with independent lab testing, and let you decide for yourself what that's worth. If a brand won't do that — publish their COAs, tell you the actual cannabinoid figures, be straight about what the law does and doesn't let them claim — that's worth asking why.

Is CBD legal in the UK?
Yes. CBD products derived from industrial hemp are legal in the UK provided they contain no more than the permitted trace level of THC and are registered under the FSA's Novel Food regime where required.
Can any CBD brand legally say their product relieves pain?
