Full-Spectrum vs Broad-Spectrum CBD Explained

If you've been looking at CBD oils, you've probably seen "full-spectrum" and "broad-spectrum" on the label. They're not marketing fluff — they describe genuinely different extraction outcomes. Here's what each one actually contains, and how to tell them apart.

What is full-spectrum CBD?

Full-spectrum CBD contains the full range of naturally occurring compounds extracted from the hemp plant: CBD itself, terpenes (the aroma and flavour compounds), minor cannabinoids like CBG and CBN, and trace THC — always kept under the UK legal limit of 0.2%. Nothing beyond CBD is added or removed during processing; it's the least-refined extract type.

What is broad-spectrum CBD?

Broad-spectrum CBD goes through the same extraction process as full-spectrum, then an additional step removes the THC specifically, while leaving the other cannabinoids and terpenes intact. The practical difference from full-spectrum is one line: broad-spectrum contains no detectable THC at all.

Full-spectrum vs broad-spectrum: the actual differences

Feature Full-Spectrum Broad-Spectrum
Contains CBD Yes Yes
Contains terpenes Yes Yes
Contains minor cannabinoids Yes Yes
Contains THC (up to 0.2% in UK) Yes, trace No, removed

Which one should you choose?

That's a personal call, not one we can make for you or claim an outcome from. If you'd rather avoid THC entirely — for a drug test, a workplace policy, or just personal preference — broad-spectrum is the more cautious option. If you're not concerned about trace THC, full-spectrum is the less-processed extract.

Why it matters what's actually in the bottle

At Calm Leaf, every batch is independently lab-tested and the cannabinoid breakdown is published, not just claimed. Explore CBD oils or premium hemp flower, and read how we ensure every Calm Leaf product is lab-tested for the full picture.
