How to Store Hemp Tea and CBD Solid Extract for Best Results

Proper storage genuinely changes what ends up in your cup — it's the difference between aroma and terpenes staying intact and a batch that's gone flat and dry before you've finished it. Here's what actually matters.

Why storage matters

Hemp tea flower and CBD solid extract are both natural, dried plant materials. Four things affect them over time:

  • Air — too much exposure dries flower out and lets aroma escape.
  • Light — UV exposure degrades cannabinoids and terpenes over time.
  • Humidity — too much moisture risks mould; too little makes flower brittle and crumbly.
  • Temperature — heat speeds up degradation; extreme cold and freeze-thaw cycles can damage trichomes.

Storing hemp tea flower

  1. Use an airtight container. Glass jars with a tight seal are best — avoid plastic bags, which let air in and can taint flavour.
  2. Keep it out of direct light. A dark cupboard or drawer works; amber or UV-protected glass is a step up if you're storing jars on display.
  3. Aim for the right humidity band. Around 55–62% relative humidity is the target range — a small humidity pack (like a Boveda pack) helps regulate this if you're storing larger amounts.
  4. Keep it at room temperature. Skip the fridge or freezer — temperature swings can damage the trichomes that carry most of the aroma and cannabinoid content.

Storing CBD solid extract

Solid extract is more concentrated than flower but follows the same basic rules:

  • Wrap it in parchment paper before placing it in an airtight container — this stops it sticking to plastic or foil.
  • Keep it cool and dark. Light and heat will dry it out or make it crumble faster than it should.
  • Portion it if you're storing a larger amount, so you're only opening what you need at a time and the rest stays sealed.

How long does it actually stay fresh?

With the storage conditions above: hemp tea flower typically holds its aroma and cannabinoid profile well for 6–12 months, and CBD solid extract for longer, often up to 18 months, given its lower moisture content. Cannabinoids and terpenes degrade gradually over time regardless of storage — good conditions slow that process, they don't stop it entirely.

What we do on our end

Every batch is packed and sealed at the point of dispatch to preserve it in transit, and every batch is independently lab-tested before it's listed — see how we ensure every Calm Leaf product is lab-tested. Explore the current range in hemp tea flower and CBD solid extract.
