Reading a COA: How to Actually Check a CBD Lab Report
Most CBD brands say the words "lab tested" somewhere on their site and stop there. We've already told you how we ensure every Calm Leaf product is lab-tested. This one goes further: what's actually printed on a Certificate of Analysis, and what you should be checking before you trust it.
A COA isn't a badge. It's a document, usually two to four pages, produced by an independent lab after they've run a physical sample of that exact batch through analytical equipment. If a brand can't hand you one, there's nothing behind the claim on the packet.
Cannabinoid Breakdown—This is the table at the top of the report. It lists every cannabinoid the lab screened for — CBD, CBDA, THC, THCA, CBG, CBN and others — each as a percentage by weight, alongside the amount detected in milligrams. Two numbers matter most:
Total CBD (CBDA converts to CBD when heated, so a proper report shows both and combines them). This should roughly match what's advertised on the product.
Total THC. UK law caps this at 0.2%. The report should state a clear pass or fail against that limit, not a vague "trace amounts."
If the percentages on the COA don't match the product description, or the batch number on the report doesn't match the batch on your packet, that's not a paperwork slip — it's a reason to ask questions.
Terpene Profile—Terpenes are the aromatic compounds that give hemp its scent and flavour — the citrus, pine, or earthy notes you pick up in flower before you even open the jar. A full-panel COA lists individual terpenes (myrcene, limonene, caryophyllene, and so on) with their own percentages. A report that skips terpenes entirely usually means the lab only ran the cheapest cannabinoid screen — worth noting if the brand is marketing a specific strain or aroma.
Contaminant Screening—This is the section that actually protects you, and it's the one most competitors never mention by name. A thorough COA screens for:
Pesticides — residues from cultivation, tested against maximum residue limits
Heavy metals — lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury, which hemp readily absorbs from soil
Microbials — mould, yeast, and bacterial contamination
Residual solvents — relevant for anything extracted, including solid extract
Each line shows a result against a defined limit, with a pass or fail. If a COA only shows cannabinoids and nothing else, it's telling you the product is potent — not that it's clean.
Batch Numbers—Every COA should be tied to a specific batch number, and that number should appear on the product packaging. A single certificate sitting on a website with no batch reference, used to represent every jar the brand has ever sold, isn't a current test — it's an old one being recycled. Hemp is agricultural; composition shifts batch to batch, which is exactly why we test tea, flower and extract individually rather than testing once and calling it done.
What to Be Suspicious Of—A brand that mentions "lab tested" but publishes no downloadable COA. A COA with no batch number, no date, or no named laboratory. A cannabinoid-only report with no contaminant panel. Numbers on the COA that don't line up with what's printed on the product. Any of these means you're being asked to trust a claim you can't actually verify.
A real COA is boring to read and that's the point — rows of numbers, pass/fail columns, a lab letterhead. If a brand won't show you theirs, ask why.
