Is Hemp Tea Caffeine-Free?

by Frank 18 Oct 2026
Content & Marketing Lead at Calm Leaf
Mug of caffeine-free hemp tea

Yes. Hemp tea made from hemp alone contains no caffeine. The hemp plant does not produce caffeine, so a cup of pure hemp tea is caffeine-free in the same way as peppermint or rooibos. A hemp tea only contains caffeine when it is blended with an ingredient that does.

Where caffeine comes from

Only a small number of plants make caffeine. The ones you are most likely to find in a mug are:

  • the tea plant, Camellia sinensis, which gives us black, green, white and oolong tea
  • coffee
  • cacao, the source of chocolate
  • yerba mate and guayusa
  • guarana, often used in energy drinks

Hemp is not on that list. That is why hemp tea counts as a herbal tea, sometimes called a tisane: an infusion made from a plant other than the tea plant.

When a hemp tea can contain caffeine

Some brands sell hemp blended with green tea, black tea, mate or chocolate pieces. Those blends contain caffeine from the added ingredient, not from the hemp. How much depends on the recipe and the amount of the caffeinated ingredient in each serving.

If a product lists anything other than hemp, read the full ingredients. A front label that says hemp tea does not tell you whether the pouch also contains tea leaves.

What is in Calm Leaf hemp tea

Calm Leaf's loose hemp tea is sold as hemp flower on its own. We do not blend it with black tea, green tea or any other caffeinated ingredient. Each product page shows the variety, grade and growing method, so you know exactly what you are buying.

Caffeine-free does not mean suitable for everyone

Hemp tea is caffeine-free, but it is still a hemp product, and hemp naturally contains cannabinoids, including CBD, in amounts that vary by variety and batch. The Food Standards Agency advises that people who are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking any medication should not consume CBD products. If that applies to you, speak to your GP or pharmacist before trying hemp tea.

Mixing hemp tea with regular tea

You can brew hemp tea alongside a regular tea bag if you like the combination. Black or green tea will add caffeine to the cup, the same as any other cup of that tea.

To keep the cup caffeine-free, pair hemp with other herbal ingredients instead: a sprig of fresh mint, a strip of lemon or orange peel, a slice of fresh ginger or a cinnamon stick.

Is decaf the same as caffeine-free?

No. Decaffeinated tea and coffee have most of their caffeine removed, but a small amount usually remains. A pure herbal infusion such as hemp tea has none to begin with.

Frequently asked questions

Does hemp tea contain any caffeine at all?

Pure hemp tea contains none. Caffeine only appears if the product is blended with a caffeinated ingredient such as black tea, green tea or mate.

Is hemp tea a herbal tea?

Yes. Because it is not made from the tea plant, hemp tea is classed with herbal infusions such as peppermint, chamomile and rooibos.

Does hemp tea contain CBD?

Hemp naturally contains cannabinoids, including CBD, and the amount varies by variety and batch. Check the product information and any batch report supplied with it. Our guide to reading a lab report explains what to look for.

Can I drink hemp tea at any time of day?

There is no fixed time for hemp tea. Pick a variety by flavour and brew it whenever it suits you. Morning or evening covers choosing a cup for different times of day.

Where can I buy caffeine-free hemp tea in the UK?

Calm Leaf is based in Liverpool and delivers across the UK. Every variety in our hemp tea collection is hemp on its own, with no tea leaves blended in. Not sure which to pick? Our hemp tea flavour guide sorts the range by taste.
